How to sew clothes for a dog

The first who came up with the idea of dressing their dogs were the Eskimos and Samoyeds. They dressed the dogs in leather boots with deer hair inside. Such boots were needed to prevent the paw pads of sled dogs from cracking and freezing while running in sleds.

There is information that during the Renaissance, noble ladies decorated their small dogs with various scarves made of colored rags. It is not known for certain what breeds the dogs were, but the fact about the clothes is documented.

The same can be said about the eighteenth century. Madame Pampadour had a whole “collection” of small lap dogs. Madame especially loved her two lapdogs, and the dressmakers, along with dresses for Madame, sewed exquisite outfits for her cute dogs. The dresses were made of velvet and silk and decorated with embroidery and precious lace. Such models were very expensive.

But large breed dogs began to be dressed only in the twentieth century. For the first time, clothing for large dogs was made in the Swiss Alps. There they came up with special overalls for dogs of different breeds and special vests for rescue dogs.

Later, dogs began to be dressed for beauty at holidays and exhibitions. “Dog fashion” has appeared.

The fashion for clothing for dogs and cats has recently come to our country. But today we see that for dogs of decorative breeds, Russian dog breeders buy dresses and jumpers, and for large breeds they prefer overalls and sports vests.

Today it has become very fashionable to dress your pets, so many studios have appeared that sew clothes for dogs and cats. Many pet stores sell clothes from these ateliers. The price for such products is very high. Dogs, like children, tend to grow quickly and wear out their new clothes. In addition, owners take their pets to exhibitions where they are often “greeted by their clothes.” Many dog breeders want to see their pets in special, exclusive clothes, and such outfits are expensive.

In order not to pay a lot of money and at the same time be sure that the thing your dog is wearing is a unique copy, comfortable and in size, it is better to sew it yourself. You can dream up a whole collection of outfits for all occasions! Use different fabrics, trims, decorate with rhinestones and embroidery, but do not forget about the comfort and well-being of your pet. I really love to sew, knit and come up with unusual patterns. Perhaps I will be an artist-fashion designer, but today I want to try my hand at making warm clothes for my beloved dog - my faithful friend.

Natural fur has many advantages. Its heat-protective properties are very great. Fur products are durable. But its price is much higher than other materials, and I want my product not to be expensive. In addition, in order to work with natural fur, special sewing machines are needed.

Fleece is a very common material today. Blankets, sweatshirts, jackets and often clothes for dogs are sewn from it; it is very pleasant to the body, has good heat-protective properties, and has good breathability, but due to the fact that this material contains synthetic threads, it quickly becomes covered with pellets and loses its visual appeal.

Faux fur is inferior in properties to natural fur, but has a number of advantages. It is relatively inexpensive. Can be painted in bright colors. It has sufficient heat-protective properties and faux fur parts can be processed using a regular sewing machine.

Lining fabric with a thin synthetic layer

Cotton has excellent hygienic properties, is not expensive and is very suitable for lining my product, but I decided to sew a warm product designed for the harsh northern winter and therefore I will try to consider other options.

The lining fabric is made of artificial threads and has low breathability; in addition, artificial fabrics electrify the dog’s fur and the animal experiences discomfort.

Flannelette fabric is very suitable for my product. It will enhance its heat-protective properties and will be pleasant to the animal’s body, but the bike has a fleecy surface on both sides and therefore, in combination with fur, at the seams it can look rough.

Flannel fabric is soft, pleasant to the touch, of natural origin, fleecy only on the front side. It will enhance the heat-protective properties of the product. My dog will be pleasant, comfortable and warm.

Decorative cord

I really want to see a product for my pet that is not only practical, but also beautiful. Various decorative materials can help with this.

Any decoration could add originality to the fur coat, decorate the product, make it elegant and unique. It all depends on the imagination and taste of the hostess.

To finish my product, I choose reflective tape, since its use, in addition to the aesthetic effect, also has a practical one. Any passing car will see my dog on a polar night. Today, reflective elements are mandatory for the safety of children and animals. To make the braid look elegant, I cut one side along a wavy line.

In addition to the silver braid, my product is decorated with a decorative clasp - a silver zipper (it has not only a practical, but also a decorative function). Shiny red sequins that secure the braid and form a monogram on one side of the product (the first letter of my dog's name).

When choosing methods for making a product, I think that it should not only be warm, but also comfortable. My dog is very active. When following commands, she has to take a barrier, run fast, stand on her hind legs, etc.

I really like to knit. Knitted from items from my wardrobe. My dog also has blouses knitted by me. This time I would not like to repeat myself when choosing a manufacturing method; besides, I also really like sewing. Although I do not rule out that some elements of the product may be knitted. For example, a collar or sleeves, perhaps the product may have knitted inserts. All this helps the dog to move and play freely.
