Snakes
In total, about 3 thousand species of snakes are known on Earth, of which 300-400 species are poisonous. Snakes have mastered all possible habitats. They are found in forests, mountains, stepspes and deserts, in seas and oceans. Most snakes, of course, are in the tropics. There are burrowing snakes, terrestrial snakes, arboreal snakes that spend their entire lives in the crowns of tropical trees, snakes that live in rocks, and water snakes that live in rivers and lakes. In the tropical zone of the oceans there are sea snakes that spend their entire lives in the sea. There are even flying snakes! Tree snakes from the genus Chrysopelea, jumping from a branch, flatten their bodies and glide over a fairly long distance.
Snakes are the youngest group of reptiles, they appeared only about 100-120 million years ago. The ancestors of snakes were lizards related to modern monitor lizards. Zoologists believe that the appearance of snakes is associated with an increase in the number of small mammals in ancient times.
